Non Detergent Motor Oil

By Performance Guru | February 6, 2010

Engine owners eventually need to make an important decision about how to best care for their engines, with detergent oil or non detergent oil .  Even though detergent oil has not been widely used for many decades, it is the predominant type of oil used today.  Non detergent oil is not best suited for all applications, oil distributors normally recommend engine types for specific oils.

It is probably not worth the time to argue over, but there are many mechanics out there that will deliberate about the detergent content in detergent oil.  There are mechanics that disagree on the chemical content of detergent oil, some say that it is not present, but a chemical that prevents carbon deposits from coagulating together and forming oil sludge.  The oil filter would then remove the bits of carbon before they became a problem for the performance of the engine.

Transmission fluid and gear lube are other uses for non detergent oils, but it is important to match the correct lubricant to the correct gear box.  Each engine or gear box should come with recommendations from the company on the best lubricant to use for optimal performance and maintenance.  If you have access to an Internet connection, you can get almost any information about your engine, motor, or transmission online, direct from the manufacturers.

Sometimes, there are actually too many choices for lubrication applications, which includes high detergent and non detergent oil.  For engines that require it, engines may be lubricated with high detergent oil instead of the traditional types of oil.  One way for people to clean the inside of engines is to engage the use of a high detergent oil.  HD oil is sometimes used as a flushing oil before oil changes, but this varies to a high degree on the engine specifications and the preferences of the automotive technician.  As a preliminary step in changing an engine’s oil, some guys like to use HD oil or high detergent oil to help cleansing an engine of dirty carbon buildup.  Increasing the frequency of oil changes can also reduce the amount of carbon suspended in motor oil and reducing the need for either high detergent oil or the need for flushing fluid to be added to engine lubricant.
